Adam
Adam is a talented artist with very high needs autism, significant sensory issues and ADHD who has been passionate about drawing and painting since he was a toddler. He particularly enjoys the swirling colours and light in the work of Vincent Van Gogh creating striking pastel renditions. Through art, Adam has not only been able to find focus and express himself but also the ability to spark inspiration in others.
Once displayed in the foyer of Sommerville School, his rendition of The Starry Night originally painted by the Dutch post-impressionist painter did just that when one of the office staff at the time - John, took such a liking to it, that he photographed it, knowing that he would be heading to New York where the original was housed.
Standing before the original in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the picture which John had on his phone stirred an immediate interest from a group of onlookers. The discussion that ensued created a firm friendship with John and a couple of Welsh travellers, who were amazed by Adam’s art work and were keen to follow his story. Upon John’s return to NZ the experience inspired him to purchase Adam’s painting to remind him of this unique connection.
